Expect to find curse words, nudity, (occasionally explicit) talk of sex, and angry ranting, but NEVER slurs or sexually violent language. I use TW when I am aware of the need and on request.

Art Sharing #6: Karin Collins (miniature collages, jewelry)
Karin Collins

Karin's work speaks to me of healing through self-expression, not only because that was her reason for beginning this art, but because I believe every person who choses to wear one would also be healing themselves through self-expression. Each spoon collage is a microcosm of meaning; I imagine it would be especially meaningful for those who have suffered EDs, but not only for them. All of us have to learn how to nourish ourselves with positivity -- these look like spoonfuls of magic, and having one around your neck would be a constant reminder to drink in the beauty of life, and not let it pass you by.

"Fashion was the last thing on my mind when I began experimenting with using spoons as the canvas for the collages. I was looking for a way to heal myself from the eating disorder, and fashion sort of found me and became a part of that."

"I started SpoonFed Art as a business in late 2004, but it originated out of therapy I was receiving for a long-term eating disorder. I had been seeing an eating disorders counselor for about a year when she gave me an assignment to make a collage that told the story of where I was and where I wanted my life to go. That was in 2002, and it took me a year (yes, a year!) to start the collage, but as I worked on it, it took on a life of its own and I was truly amazed at the end result. I started making other collages and eventually they made their way onto spoons, finally evolving into the spoon pendants."

"A lot of things came together to make it happen, but the end result is that the spoon pendants were an extension of the collages I had been making. It sounds funny but when I started making the pendants, I didn't think about the eating disorder and the symbolism involved with using an eating utensil as the medium. I was just experimenting with different mediums for my collage projects and it just sort of happened. When I realized what I was doing, using something that you use to "feed" yourself to make jewelry, it seemed really appropriate – and kind of funny! It really reflected what I was working on personally."

Just.....wow!
Wow. So very many of those pieces speak so deeply to me!
Me too! And this is the trimmed-down version -- there must be at least 30 more that I liked enough to save but couldn't post because I wanted to keep it reasonable.
Absolutely breathtaking!
*agrees!*
These are _amazing_. I'd heard of her before, but had never actually seen her work. Thank you SO much for sharing; and I can definitely relate to the message.
you're so welcome! glad you liked!
wow those are really cool. can you imagine how amazing an xmas tree would be if you hung up a ton of those as ornaments? you could sit in a chair by the tree and just look at all of em for hours. :-)
oooooohhhh, wow, yes *dreams*
The pretty shinies entranced me! Exactly my sort of treasure. =)
me too! :D
These are amazing pieces of art! Thank you for sharing them!
you're welcome!
Bel, soooooo beautiful and the cause is so right. So spiritually nourishing. ♥

Thank you for posting this.
♥ ♥ You're welcome, lovey!
Just, wow. They're phenomenal.
I agree! and I agree with your userpic keyword too ;-)
It's a quote from the Mishnah, which is oral tradition in Judaism. The context says something along the lines of: Why was only one man created by God? — to teach that whoever takes a single life destroys thereby a whole world.
Oooooh, these are beautiful. I want one!
What a cool story! That's so awesome. And the art is absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for sharing
you're welcome!
wow. those are amazing. so beautiful!
Those are amazing!!!! So beautiful!
And...very expensive, not that that was a suprise. Definetly wrth it, will have to bookmark in my "For when I'm rich" folder, lololol
haha, I think so too! ;-) and I have one of those folders myself :D
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for writing about these! I'd never seen this woman's art before, and I fell straight in love with these in a way I haven't with *any* jewellery. Thank you!

And, er, perhaps I should finally add you! I'm Sabrina, Irish gal, found you months ago, at least, but was too shy to add you then and instead just kept checking in regularly to see what you'd written. Your openness inspires me: I am honest, but I am not generally open and partition off bits of my life even from the people closest to me. Your lived example, though, is making me confront the parts of me that keep me closed and remote. I would love to get to know you as a friend rather than a stealthy reader, so hallo!
